Chapter Four

Lucy

I just got everything I ever wanted up against Daddy’s car in a parking garage. Well, almost everything. He didn’t actually fuck me, but that orgasm was so far beyond anything I’ve ever given myself. All I can hope is that he doesn’t regret it when daylight shines on the fact that he used to be married to my mom.

He takes me to a local farm to plate restaurant where they slide the front windows open so the whole dining area seems outdoors. We sit just inside the threshold, watching people move up and down the street at a slow pace.

“Do you live far from here?” I ask.

“Not too far. Technically, I live in Menlo Park, but on the Peninsula, one city just runs into another. You can’t tell the boundaries.” He tilts his head. “Do you want me to show you my place, Lucy?”

“Yes, please. If you don’t have to be back at work right away.”

He shrugs. “I’m working for a start-up right now, so I do most of my work from home. Technically, I’m not getting paid unless you count the stock I have in a company that doesn’t exist yet.”

“How can you live without getting paid?”

“I’m not worried about money. You might not know this since your mom acted like she paid all the bills, but I make very good money.”

“You just said you’re not making any money.”

He rolls his eyes but huffs out a laugh. “Then I said that I have enough that I can easily spend a few years working for start-ups until something pans out.”

“Okay, then I’d love to see your house.”

We pack up our leftovers and head back to the car, stopping only for me to get an ice cream cone. As Daddy drives us out of the parking structure, he shakes his head.

“You licking an ice cream cone should be illegal, especially while I’m driving.”

I can’t wipe the smile off my face all the way to his condo. When he pulls up to what looks like a little cottage style house, I look around.

“This is a condo? I always pictured a condo as more of an apartment.”

“I think it has more to do with the Homeowner’s Association than the actual style of building. I bought this place because I don’t have to mow a lawn, but I also don’t have anyone above or below me. I do share one common wall with the neighbor, but it’s the wall where my office is. I’m only in there during the day, and the walls are thick, so it’s like having my own house without the astronomical price tag of buying a freestanding home in Menlo Park.”

I could probably fit five of my studio apartments into his condo. His backyard is basically just a patio, but it’s completely private, which is nice.

“My office is down there.” He points to one end of the hall as he takes my hand and pulls me in the other direction. “But my bed’s in here. That’s what you wanted so see, wasn’t it?”

“I was hoping to do more than look at your bed.
